Writer's Den

Several writers and content creators here in Village Farm started a new Facebook Messenger chat to meet and share about our common interests. Although there are many writers groups and clubs in Austin where we can connect and get help with accountability, those are only online, are by paid membership, or else require driving across town and buying coffee to pay for the table space. Yet one of the best amenities we have at Village Farm is the farmhouse, so why not roll our own?

For a month now, Monday nights have been "Writer's Den", a reserved set of hours where creators can come and make real progress on their projects. Starting at 6:30, the water is heating for tea and quiet focus music is playing. A puzzle is set up in the kitchen, if anyone needs a standing break to clear their heads. People come and go as they need. After the sun sets, we start talking with each other, asking about the day's projects or whatever else needs acknowledging. It's a great way to connect and get to know each other.

And what about those who don't want the quiet work time? The front room is currently being used by a group learning mahjong, whose noise is contained with closed doors. The game room with the round table is a good spot for those who have creative projects that lend themselves to chatting, such as crafts; that room also has a door we can close. The soft background noise of muffled voices adds to the old library feel and makes the writing flow easier.

Bring a book or any quiet projects you want to make progress on. Use this Writer's Den, this dedicated time each week, to build something you care about. It's a great way to solve your procrastination -- which we all understand and share!
